BASIC NOTES PRINCIPLES OF SCIENTIFIC MANAGEMENT

In the earlier days of the Industrial Revolution, the lack of an established method of the company organization, company owners or managers relied on the individual knowledge in attending to the problems they faced in the course of managing their work. This is what is referred to as the ‘rule of thumb’. Managing factories by the rule of thumb enabled them to handle the situations as they arose but suffered from the limitation of a trial and error approach. For their experiences to be copied it was necessary to know what works and why does it work. For this, there was a need to follow an approach that was based on the methods of science defining a problem, developing alternative solutions, anticipating consequences, measuring progress, and drawing conclusions.

In this situation, Taylor developed as the father of scientific management. He proposed scientific management as opposed to the rule of thumb. He broke up human activity into small parts and found out how it could be done effectively, in less time, and with productivity. It implies conducting business activities according to standardized tools, methods, and trained personnel to increase the output, improve its quality and reduce costs and wastages.

In the words, Taylor Scientific management means knowing exactly what you want men to do and seeing that they do it in the best and cheapest way. The Bethlehem Steel Company where Taylor himself worked achieved a three-fold increase in productivity by application of scientific management principles. Therefore, it would be to discuss these principles.

Business Studies Notes Tutorials Science not right thumb rule

Taylor discovered the introduction of the way of scientific inquiry into the domain of management systems. We have already referred to the limitations of the rules of thumb approach of management. As different managers would follow their original rules of thumb, it’s but the declaration of the obvious that all would not be equally valid. Taylor believed that there was only one best approach to maximize productivity. These methods can be developed through study and analysis. The method so developed should change the rule of thumb through the organization. The scientific method involves the investigation of traditional methods through work-study, unifying the best practices, and developing the standard methods, which should be followed throughout the organization. According to Taylor, even a small production like loading pigs of iron into boxcars can scientifically plan and manage. This can result in a great saving of human energy as well as wastages of time and materials. The more sophisticated the processes, the greater would be the savings.
In the present context, the use of the internet has brought about dramatic improvements in internal efficiencies and customer satisfaction.

Basic Notes About Harmony Not Discord

The factory system of production implied that managers served as a link between the owners and the workers. Since the managers, had the mandate to get work done from the workers, it should not be difficult for you to appreciate that there always existed the possibility of a kind of class conflict, the managers versus workers. Taylor recognized that this conflict helped none, the workers, the managers, or the factory owners. He emphasized that there should be complete harmony between the management and workers. Both should realize that each one is important. To achieve this state, Taylor called for a complete mental revolution on the part of both management and workers. It means that management and workers should modify their thoughtful. In such a condition even trade societies will not think of going on success etc.
Management should share the profits of the company if any, with the workers. At the same time, workers should work hard and be willing to welcome change for a good company. Both should be part of the family. According to Taylor scientific management has for its foundation the firm conviction that the exact interests of the two are the same: that victory for the employer cannot be for a long time unless it is completed by victory for the employees and vice versa’.
Japanese professional culture is a well-known example of such a position. In Japanese companies, the paternalistic style of management is in practice. There is a complete agreement between the management and workers. If at all workers go to tie-up they wear a black medal but work more than regular working hours to profit the understanding of the management.

Basic Tutorials Notes For Cooperation Not Individualism

There should be a complete agreement between the labor and the management instead of circumstances. This principle is an increase of principles of Harmony Not discord. Competition should be replaced by cooperation. Both should realize that they need each other.

For this, management should not stop its attention to any valuable suggestions made by the employees. They should be rewarded for their suggestions which results in a substantial reduction in costs. They should be part of management & if any vital decisions are taking, workers should be taking into the trust.

At the same time, workers should end up going on knock and making extreme offers on the management. When there will be an open communication system and goodwill there will be no need for even a trade union. The paternalistic style of management, whereby the employer takes care of the needs of employees, would prevail as in the case of Japanese companies.

According to Taylor, there should be an almost equal division of work and responsibility between professionals and executives. All-day long the management should work almost side by side with the workers helping, encouraging, and smoothing the way for them.

Development of Each Person to His or Her Greatest Performance and Success:

Industrial efficiency depends on a large space on personnel ability. As such, scientific management also stood for worker extension. Worker training was necessary to get the best system developed as a result of the scientific approach Taylor was a view that the business for efficiency could be built-in right from the method of choice. Each personality should be scientifically decided. Then work selected should suit her/his material, mental, and capabilities. To improve the power, they should give the required practice. Efficient employees would produce more and earn more. This will secure their greatest performance and success for both company and workers.

From the foregoing discussion, it is clear that Taylor was a constant supporter of the use of scientific methods of production in the business.
