FEATURES/NATURE/CHARACTERISTIC OF PLANNING

The planning function of the management has particular unique features. These features throw light on its character and scope.

Planning Focuses On Achieving Objectives (Planning Contributes To Objective)

Associations are set up with a general-purpose viewpoint. Exact goals are set out in the plans along with the activities to be undertaken to attain the goals. Thus, planning is purposeful. Planning has no meaning unless it presents the attainment of predetermined organizational goals.

Planning starts with the determination of objectives. We cannot think of planning in absence of an objective, Alter setting up the objectives, planning decides the methods, procedures, and steps to be taken for the achievement of set objectives. Planners also help and get changes in the plan if something is not progressing in the direction of objectives.

Planning Is The Primary Function Of Management

Planning applies down the base for other parts of management. All different managerial functions are performed within the framework of the goals removed. Thus, planning precedes other functions. This is also directed to the importance of planning. The various functions of management are corresponding and equally important. However, planning provides the foundation for all other functions.

Planning is the primary or first function to be executed by every manager. No different function can be executed by the manager without performing a planning function because goals are set up in planning and other roles depend on the objectives only.

Planning Is Pervasive

Planning is needed at all levels of management and in all departments of the organization. It is not a whole function of top management or any special department. But the scope of planning differs at various levels and among other departments.

Planning is needed at all levels of the management. It is not a function confined to top-level managers only but planning is accomplished by managers at every level. Formation of prominent plans and framing of all approaches is the task of top-level managers whereas departmental managers form plans for their separate departments. And lower-level managers create plans to support the overall purposes and to carry on day-to-day activities.

Planning Is Continuous

Plans are ready for a specific period, maybe for a month, a quarter, or a year. At the end of the period, there is essential for a new plan to be removed based on new requirements and future conditions. Thus, planning is a continuous method. Continuity of planning is interconnected to the planning process. It means that a plan is formulated, it is executed, and is followed by another plan, and so on.

Planning is the never-ending or continuous process after creating plans also one has to be in contact with the changes in changing environment and in the choice of one best way. So, after creating plans planners also keep making modifications in the plans according to the condition of the organization.

Planning Is Futuristic/Forward Lacking

Planning involves looking forward and preparing for fate. The objective of planning is to meet future circumstances effectively to the best benefit of an organization. It implies peeping into the future, analyzing it, and foreseeing it. Therefore, planning is considered a forward-looking function based on forecasting. Through forecasting, future circumstances and conditions are expected and plans are drawn consequently.

Planning always means looking ahead or planning is a futuristic function. Planning is never done in the past. All the managers try to make predictions and assumptions for the future and these predictions are made based on past experiences of the manager and with the regular and intelligent scanning of the general environment.

Planning Involves Decision-Making

Planning involves a selection of different choices and activities. If there is the best possible goal or course of action, there is no requirement for planning because there is no option. The need for planning occurs only when options are available. In actual practice, planning pre-supposes the presence of an option. Thus, planning involves a thorough test and evaluation of each option and selecting the most suitable one.

The planning process is required only when different options are available best we have to pick the most suitable option. We cannot imagine planning in absence of choice because the planning procedure manager evaluates different alternatives and select the most suitable. But if there is one option available then there is no requirement of planning.

Planning Is A Mental Exercise

Planning needs the application of the mind involving foresight, intelligent imagination, and good decision. It is philosophical activity and thinking rather than doing because planning defines the activity to be taken. However, planning needs analytical and systematic review rather than guesswork or wishful thinking. In other words, thinking for planning must be clean and based on the analysis of facts and predictions.

It is a mental exercise. Planning is a mental procedure that needs higher thinking i.e., why it is kept different from operational activities by Taylor. In planning premises and predictions are made by scanning the environment suitably. This activity directs a higher level of intelligence. Secondly, in planning different options are estimated, and the most suitable is chosen which again requires a more elevated level of intelligence. So, it is right to reach planning an intellectual method.
